When I think about my life and my connection to water polo, it’s impossible not to acknowledge how deeply rooted this sport is in my family and culture. Growing up in Hungary, where water polo is considered a national treasure, I was surrounded by the influence of the game from an early age.
It was more than just a sport—it was part of our identity.
For me, it all started with my grandfather. He was a competitive swimmer, carving his own path in the water with determination and grace. Then came my father, who elevated the legacy by becoming a professional water polo player. Watching him train, compete, and carry the pride of our family and country inspired me from a very young age. It wasn’t just his achievements that inspired me, but the passion and discipline he brought to the sport. Naturally, it wasn’t long before I followed in his footsteps.
As a kid, swimming came easily to me. I loved being in the water, but something was missing—it lacked the spark I was searching for. I’ve always been drawn to sports that involve a ball, where strategy, teamwork, and competition come together. Scoring goals, outsmarting opponents, and working as a team gave me the kind of thrill that plain swimming couldn’t. Water polo, with its perfect blend of swimming and ball play, was the natural choice. It wasn’t just my idea; my father, seeing my interests, encouraged me to dive into water polo. It was a decision that would shape my life.
The sport requires a unique combination of physical and mental toughness. You have to be an excellent swimmer, able to race back and forth across the pool for an entire match. But swimming is just the beginning. You also need the strength to wrestle for a position, the awareness to find your teammates, and the skill to score goals under intense pressure. It’s a sport where endurance, strategy, and teamwork are constantly tested.
Playing water polo has taught me more than just how to play the game—it has instilled values that extend far beyond the pool. It has taught me resilience, discipline, and the importance of working with others toward a common goal. Every match is a battle, and every goal scored is a reward for the collective effort of the team.
Hungary has a rich history in water polo. As a nation, we have won the most Olympic gold medals in the sport, a testament to the incredible talent and dedication of Hungarian players over the years. Growing up in a country with such a proud tradition, I felt a responsibility to uphold that legacy. Representing Hungary as a professional water polo player has been one of the greatest honours of my life. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of wearing my country’s colours and stepping into the pool, knowing I’m part of a story that stretches back generations.
Looking back, I realise how fortunate I am to have had the opportunity to pursue my passion. Water polo has connected me to my family, my country, and a community of players and fans worldwide who share the same love for the game. It’s not just a sport for me—it’s a way of life.
As I continue my journey in water polo, I carry with me the lessons I’ve learned, the pride of my heritage, and the joy of playing a sport I truly love. And when I think of my grandfather and father, I feel grateful for the legacy they’ve passed down to me—a legacy I hope to carry forward and inspire in others.
